One Saturday morning in July, 2011 I received a phone call about this poor puppy in a pet store here in Moose Jaw. Friends wanted to 'save' it, do what ever it took for this poor pup to have a good life, but they were not sure what was needed. I said what's wrong? Why do they have it in the store? Couldn't get answers.

Shortly after I received another phone call about this puppy, another friend had stopped in at the second hand store beside the pet store and was so upset at the condition of this pup.

That afternoon I agreed to go and 'assess' the pup for the couple wanting to take him home. He couldn't even stand up on a carpet, his legs went out from under him like a new born foal or fawn. His coat was flakey and greasy, he was underweight, but oh was he happy, and loving.

My initial instinct was this is a Border Collie pup, if this is due to lack of exercise and improper nutrition and perhaps a minor injury well it can be worked with, but if it is major then a tough choice may have to be made.

The couple who wanted him, said we have to get him out of there! I agreed. They couldn't take him home that Saturday due to other 'commitments' so I agreed to meet them at the store and bring him home to assess him.

By that evening I knew he had a spirit that was unstoppable. He was happy, and loving, and so wanted to just get going. I did some physio and massage work with him and by that evening he was showing better coordination and ability already.

I didn't hear from the couple who wanted him till late on Sunday, when she called to say they had decided to have him 'put down' that it wasn't 'fair' for him to live like 'that'. Yet they had no idea of the improvements he had made in 24 hours, the spirit and will of this puppy.

I told them quite frankly it wasn't going to happen, I would take responsibility for him and help him. 24 hours earlier they were going to do 'whatever it takes' for him to have quality of life, but after not spending anytime with him or assessing him personally they were going to kill him.

Within a couple of weeks, Weebles as we named him was standing with some assistance, able to walk a few steps. His coat had improved and he was starting to build some muscles.

Dr. Wickstrom at Acadia Vet Clinic in Saskatoon Saskatchewan started doing some nuero link work with him and water therapy when we could get to Saskatoon. Each week Weebles improved.

This puppy who could not stand and was so starved for a chance, inspires us each and every days. He is playful and happy, determined and learning. HE needs a wheel chair for stability, so that maybe he can do things like agility, fetch, and we hope therapy work in hospitals and such.

We would like to do education with him about the results of abuse, lack of vaccination, irresponsible breeding in schools and our communities. Weebles inspires us to be better, to try harder, to love with an open heart.

Malone came from a Registered Kennel. He has massive joint and allergy issues thanks to poor breeding. His cruciates when he came to me at 8 months were blown. He had his first repair at 11 months, the second at 13 months. Meniscus repair at 19 months and again a 2.5 years of age, and yet he needs another meniscus repair. He is a big Newfoundland, magnificent, if only he had good joints. His breeder made choices based that this loving gentle giant has paid for.

Together with Weebles Malone needs another surgery, to date his vet bills have totaled over $15,000 to give him quality of life. He loves everyone no matter what, we have so much to learn from these precious souls.

Malone's Magic will work towards educational programs, towards changing laws, setting up a National Registry for Rescues, Fosters, Shelters and Breeders. References, regular inspections, vet certificates and a Code of Ethics and Minimum Standards will have to be met. Weebles and Malone only want to live life with gusto and joy, they give so much to any who come into their world.
